The book hints of a romance between Amelia and Cormac in the future. This novel is a prelude to what I suspect will be the 14th and last Kitty Norville novel. The book is well written and enjoyable. It is not a stand alone novel. You must be familiar with the series to appreciate this book as it builds on the earlier novels.

I'm a fan of the Kitty Norville books but this is the first one I've reviewed.

Kitty is the host of a radio show called The Midnight Hour. She also happens to be a werewolf. But this book isn't about Kitty; it's about Cormac and it co-stars Kitty and her husband Ben.....who's a werewolf too.
Cormac is Ben's cousin who used to hunt down supernatural monsters like werewolves. Cormac was there at the start of the series when he was hired to kill Kitty... Kitty talked him out of it.

Unlike the other books in the series, this book isn't written in the first perceptive which can be a bit jarring if you've read the earlier books.

Cormac is sent out to solve a century-old murder in order to get something that can possibly kill off the evil vampire Roman, who's out to take over the world... or destroy it.

While I'm a fan of this book series, i'd admit that they're not the next Great American Novel. This book moves a touch too slow for my liking but i did enjoy reading it.

I look forward to reading the next book in this series which will also be the final book of the series.

It was an enjoyable read for me
I really liked the tone of this book, which differs from the Kitty centred books in a good and interesting way. In part, the difference arises from the partnership between Amelia and Cormac with its unique tensions and opportunities. In part, it's in the pacing, which was both slower and more fragmented than most Norville stories, and far more driven by A and C's relationship and magic than by any actions on the part of the bad guys. Kitty and Ben were shown in a not-necessarily flattering, but clearly cared-about way, which will enrich the Kitty-centric stories. On the bad side, this story never really coalesced. It felt more like a series of vignettes than one overarching narrative, and nothing either very bad or very good happened along the way. Cormac and Amelia were never in any terrible danger, and never had much trouble getting out of risky situations, which lessened the impact of the book. All in all, a light read that casts new light on secondary characters in the main series.
This is a FINE addition to the fascinating world of Kitty, the werewolf with a radio talk show in Denver.

This book tells a tale of Cormac, the vampire/werewolf hunter who accidentally got bound up with the dead spirit of a woman who's been dead for over 100 years who just happens to know magic. It's an often uneasy cohabitation but it seems to work out. Cormac gets pulled into a mystery when he sees an old girl friend who offers him a job -- which of course turns out to have a bit more magic and werewolves involved that one might think. Along the way he finds a pair of witches in Manitou Springs and a mysterious spell that might -- or might not -- literally drag gold out of the ground to be picked up.

Carrie Vaughn had said that she'd wanted to explore the character of Cormac a bit more and this book delivers. HIGHLY recommended if you're a fan of the series (and if you're not you obviously just haven't tried it yet).
For all fans of the series who have wanted to get to know Cormac, the mysterious former were hunter turned ally, better, up close and personal, you get your wish in this volume. It is very interesting to read events from Cormac's point of view, since in every other volume in the series he is rather quiet, not often speaking his mind. To actually get his inner perspective on things is great! Norville does a great job of filling out this character and all the changes he has gone through, in particular his befriending and allowing himself to be possessed by a ghost while in prison. The ghost goes with him out of prison and truly changes Cormac's behavior and role in the Kitty "team". We learn a bit about her, the ghost, as well. She is, of course, innocent of the crime for which she was imprisoned. She also brings a lot of alternative means of empowering Cormac, such as spell-casting, which is a sign of creativity on Norville's part, since she has to deal with Cormac now being a convicted felon and unable to carry any of his beloved fire arms. This is an excellent addition to the series, and a welcome one. It reminded this reviewer of C.E. Murphy's "No Dominion", in which she focuses upon Gary, the on-the-spot taxi-driver who is with the main character from the start of "The Walker Papers" series.
This is a very good book, and displays some of Norville's best writing to date. Highly recommended.
