I love Courtney Milan's historical fiction. Can't speak to her contemporary romances because I don't read much contemporary romance. I read a lot of historical romance, and hers is among the best.

In this novel, a woman and her brothers have been declared illegitimate and stripped of their titles, fortune and lands because of illegal actions by their father. When Ash Turner comes to claim the title and property that is rightfully his, Lady Margaret poses as a nurse. Her brothers are content to stay out of the way, writing abusive letters to her asking why she hasn't done more to uncover his weak spots so they can reclaim their place in society.

The problem is that the more she learns about Ash, the more she comes to respect and like him. Soon she is torn between her love for her brothers and her love for Ash. Watching her work her way through this conflict is the essence of the book.

Milan is a mistress of pacing and dialogue. As the story progresses, I came to care more and more both for Ash and Margaret. Fortunately there is a HEA for them both.

Ash Turner, the possible future Duke of Parford, hoped to avenge his family for the wrongs inflicted by the current Duke and his two sons.
Ash completed his first step by proving the Duke was already married to his mistress prior to marrying the mother of his children; making bastards of the Dukes true heirs.

Anna Margaret Dalrymple, the dukes daughter, posed as a nurse for the ailing duke, in order to spy on Ash and reveal his weakness to her brothers.Ok story with a legitimate conflict to make the HEA out of reach for the hero & heroine. Lots of guilt between characters and got a bit boring.
UNVEILED is th he first book in the Turner series. It is the story of Ash Turner who is the eldest of three brothers. Ash has managed to make himself the heir to the Duke of Parford a distant cousin by proving that the Duke's children are illegitimate because the Duke had a secret marriage to his mistress in his youth. Margaret Dalrymple is the Duke's daughter. She is, however, masquerading as the dude's nurse to find out more information about Ash in order to restore her family.

The premise of this story may sound familiar but zero Milan has a way of executing these familiar story tropes in a way that is unique and empowering to her characters. Ash and Margaret are simply amazing. Ash makes Margaret see herself as empowered -- as a person who makes things happen rather than having things happen to her. He gives her the confidence to see in herself the strength to make her own future.

Milan subverts the expectations of the reader and thus pulls her characters into being more real, more human.

I had read the synopsis of this book before reading it and had in fact put off reading the book because Ash sounded like a horrible person, but he is simply amazing.
When Ash Turner discovers the Duke of Parford was in a bigamous marriage, the discovery delegitimizes the current heir and his siblings as well as putting Ash in as the Duke's heir. The current Duke is bedridden, nursed by his daughter Margaret who assumes a different identity in order to derail Ash's plans.
Ash is stubborn and brash which at times made me not like him so much, but Margaret is a strong woman who stands up to him. Ultimately, they're a good couple. Much of the drama resides in Ash's relationship with his brothers and Margaret's with her own siblings. These loyalties clash with their own relationship, testing loyalties against their love.
There's a subplot with Ash's competence and education which, quite honestly, I'm just tired of in historical romances. Learning disabilities are a real thing but it seems sometimes the entire Ton suffered from one type or another. Still, it's not overly emphasized here and doesn't take away from my overall enjoyment of the book.
I've just seen that I bought this book years ago. I recently downloaded it via Audible's Romance Package and I swear I never knew I'd read it before. Anyway, it's a good story with the reader/listener kept enthralled while waiting to see how the main characters will ever get their hea. The H "steals" a dukedom from his cousins by proving that they are illegitimate because the old Duke was a bigamist. The H wanted revenge on the old Duke because he refused to help the H and his siblings when they were left destitute. I'm not quite sure why the H pitches up to stay at the Ducal estate but he encounters the Duke's nurse right from the start. The h is nursing her father in his last days but she is in disguise as an employee. The main characters have many encounters and the h likes him in spite of the fact that he's the one responsible for the loss of her status and dowry. The h doesn't reveal who she is to the H but it should have been obvious. Anyway, the h is torn between trying to help her brothers get dirt on the H because they are challenging their illegitimacy in the courts. It's a complex story with lots of emotion. The H is a wonderful character and he carried us through to the hea. This was a new narrator for me and I found her easy to listen to.
