So Hunter is still dumb. I don't understand his mind. I don't get it. I was hoping that maybe he would redeem himself in the book from his point of view but he didn't. I do appreciate that he was willing to die for the greater good at the end but it was for the wrong reasons. He only knew Kate for a fraction of the time he knew the Merricks, he should have been doing what he did for them instead of for her. I liked that he finally opened up and trusted someone I just don't appreciate who it was. Especially considering what she was and why she was even in the story. It seemed kind of forced. I liked Kate for the book, I just didn't like Kate and Hunter together. Hunter isn't my favorite but at least I now understand why he is the way he is and how his thought process works. Maybe from now on I can understand why he makes his stupid decisions.Tags : Amazon.com: Spirit (Elemental) (9780758272836): Brigid Kemmerer: Books,Brigid Kemmerer,Spirit (Elemental),Kensington -Teen,0758272839,Fantasy - General,Paranormal, Occult & Supernatural,Romance - General,Brothers,Fantasy fiction.,Fantasy.,Four elements (Philosophy),Paranormal fiction,Supernatural,Children: Young Adult (Gr. 10-12),Fantasy,Fantasy & Magic,Fantasy & magical realism (Children's Teenage),Fantasy fiction,Fiction-Fantasy,JUVENILE,Juvenile Fiction,Juvenile Fiction Fantasy & Magic,Juvenile Grades 10-12 Ages 15+,Love & Romance,Monograph Series, any,Paranormal,TEEN'S FICTION FANTASY,TEEN'S FICTION ROMANCE,United States,YOUNG ADULT FICTION,YOUNG ADULT FICTION Action & Adventure Survival Stories,YOUNG ADULT FICTION Fantasy General,YOUNG ADULT FICTION Paranormal, Occult & Supernatural,YOUNG ADULT FICTION Romance Contemporary,YOUNG ADULT FICTION Romance General,Young Adult FictionParanormal, Occult & Supernatural,Young Adult FictionRomance - General, crossover readers;crossover reads;cross-over;crossover;teen books for girls;teen girl books;love story;couple;exciting;thrilling;acclaimed;genre fiction;series;united states;dying;romance;supernatural;adventure;contemporary romance;survival;teen romance books;fantasy books;romance books;romance novels;teen fiction books;teen books for boys;books for 13 year old girls;books for 14 year old girls;teen books;young adult books;books for teens;ya books;young adult;adventure books;books for teen girls, fantasy books; romance books; supernatural; teen romance books; teen fiction books; young adult romance; young adult fantasy books; fantasy books for teens; paranormal romance; dying; crossover readers; crossover reads; cross-over; crossover; teen books for girls; teen girl books; love story; couple; exciting; thrilling; acclaimed; genre fiction; series; united states; teen books; young adult books; books for teens; books for teen boys; books for boys age 12-14; teen boy books; teen books for boys; books for 14 year old boys,Fantasy & Magic,Juvenile Fiction Fantasy & Magic,Love & Romance,Paranormal,YOUNG ADULT FICTION Action & Adventure Survival Stories,YOUNG ADULT FICTION Fantasy General,YOUNG ADULT FICTION Paranormal, Occult & Supernatural,YOUNG ADULT FICTION Romance Contemporary,YOUNG ADULT FICTION Romance General,Young Adult FictionParanormal, Occult & Supernatural,Young Adult FictionRomance - General,Fantasy,Fantasy fiction,YOUNG ADULT FICTION,Children: Young Adult (Gr. 10-12),Fantasy & magical realism (Children's Teenage)
Spirit Elemental Brigid Kemmerer Books Reviews
(Originally read in April 2013)
What I loved I was both excited and nervous to read Hunter's story because even though I enjoyed him in the previous books, I was pretty sure he would've let me hit the ground in a trust fall. Brigid Kemmerer never fails to disappoint though, nor is she afraid to kick you in the feels, sometimes managing to make you laugh in the process. (Sometimes. Other times, she makes you cry like a little girl.)
All of her characters have their own distinct voice and deal with issues that are easily relateable, Hunter is no exception. His struggle to not only to figure out who he is but where he fits in among the other Elementals is equal parts funny and gut-wrenching. Hunter isn't your average teen but he still has a lot to learn about love, trust and friendship and who better than the Merrick brothers to impart those lessons, whether in word, deed or punch to the face.
As with her other books, Brigid Kemmerer gives us fast-paced action, suspense, seamless alternate POV's and kissing. She even dangles an almost-but-not-quite-happily-ever-after in front of you like a carrot (or in my case, a cupcake, because a carrot? Seriously?) and just when you think Hunter will get his, WHAM! However, before the story ends, you realize that Hunter may have found the one thing he didn't even realize he was looking for.
What left me wanting The cover model is cute, but I still want to see a picture of Hunter inked up and pierced. I'm pretty sure a cover like that would make me do this ---> O.O
Final verdict Thank you Brigid Kemmerer for convincing me I could love Hunter as much as those Merrick brothers!
Favorite quote(s) "I am going to stare at you until you respond. O.O"
"Why do you have earrings in your face?"
After the fallout of the fires, Hunter isn't wanted anywhere. Gabriel thinks he faked his friendship with him to keep an eye on him for Becca's dad. Which means he's an outcast at school completely. Calla, the girl responsible for the fires, is making his life hell. First, she breaks into Hunter's house and makes a mess. Then she threatens to kill him if he doesn't bring the Guides to her. When he refuses she plays the victim at school. Wanting everyone to think Hunter harmed her. To top it off Hunter's grandfather (a jerk!) believes Calla's stories even though it sounds like he just wanted an excuse to kick Hunter out. And his mom let him! Hunter is officially screwed.
Kate is a newly trained Guide. She's been planted in the high school to get close to the Merricks to observe whether they overindulge in their powers or not. Kate is a little too gung ho though. Ever since her mom was killed by a Water Elemental she's been dying for some revenge. After some serious flirting she now may be Hunter's only friend. Bringing in a Garrity would be a bonus. Since Kate is new she has an experienced Guide, Silver, watching her every move. He has absolutely no compassion. The more Kate hangs out with Hunter and the Merricks the more she's convinced that what the Guides are doing is wrong but she still has a responsibility to stop the Elementals that are doing harm. Whereas, Silver wants to kill all of them.
Hunter had a lot of rage in this book. He didn't know who he could trust and he felt like nobody was willing to trust him. He's conflicted as to which side he should be on. He also learns a few things about his dad.
The ending was shocking, especially the direction of Kate's character. Great story! On to the next one!
I didn't hate it, but this is not the Hunter we all know and love from the previous book. He is a no nonsense, don't F with me, yet cool and calm headed kid, well beyond his years. However, in his own story - he's nothing but a continual breakdown trying to happen. His ease with himself and cool confidence evaporated in this book. Granted life has been unkind, so the water works is understandable, yet at the same time confusing since his character does a 180. I wasn't the biggest fan of the girlfriend. She was tough, confident with an air of arrogance that always had Hunter off his game. I didn't like Hunter off his game, I didn't like seeing him confused, emotional and slightly unbalanced. I preferred his easy comradery, confidence and being his true self that we see within his friendship with Gabriel. Hunter and Gabriel seemed a match in heaven, but alas Gabriel is not the one in the closet. Overall quick read, the book keeps your interest, the chemistry between him and his girl is 'off' however and his personality changes drastically - two things that made it a bit disappointing. Also, he is always waving around a gun that he never intends to use. It's not like I wished for him to use it, but it becomes predictable and this side of annoying.
Maybe from now on I can understand why he makes his stupid decisions.
