As a rule, I dislike female main characters. They irritate me. They're always, well, Trixa really does put it best. "I'm hardly some leather-wearing monster killer with a cadre of hot men and demons waiting on my every sexual whim. ...Wait a minute. I'm still contemplating why I'm not that and wondering how to change it."

But because it was Rob Thurman, I gritted my teeth and read Trick of Light.

It was painful, and I rolled my eyes in despair each time I saw more evidence to backup my hatred of female main characters... But then something changed, and I spent the last half hour or so of the book with my mouth gaping open. And once it was done, I sat there staring into space for several minutes before turning the book over and starting to reread it, this time laughing as I realized that Rob had yanked my chain as surely as Trixa was yanking everyone else's. Oh my god. It was beautiful. The audiobook was even better, since it gave all of these amazing characters a genuine 'voice.'

Like so many others, I love Thurman's Cal Leandros series so I immediately ordered Trick of the Light. I wanted to see how she handles a female protagonist. Unfortunately, I wasn't impressed with Trixa. Honestly, I didn't like her. She seemed to be trying way too hard to be a bad a@@, and I had trouble getting invested in the revenge storyline. Cal was more sympathetic and outright interesting because he was an unwilling party to the hidden supernatural world, and he had a history and family that made him relatable. Secondary characters were given sufficient development. Readers don't know much about Trixa other than she loves red, she owns a bar and her brother was murdered by a demon. Trixa's main partner, Leo, says very little and is a complete mystery until the end, and Zeke and Griffin are one dimensional. Despite the implied quest of searching for the "Light of Life," there wasn't much going on in the book except for Trixa's numerous pissing contests with demons that should've been able to crush her like a bug. And the villains were cardboard cutouts.

The conclusion did have a couple big twists/surprises that I didn't anticipate - mainly because, as another reviewer pointed out, it was deux ex machina. None of these are uncommon issues in urban fantasy, and that may be why this was disappointing. Nightlife (Cal Leandros, Book 1) was very original, Trick of the Light felt like something I have read before.

However, there were some very good things going for the book. I loved how Thurman wove the story into the universe she already created with Cal Leandros. Trixa fights demons in Vegas, and the explanation for why we haven't seen them in NY is clever. Robin Goodfellow makes a cameo (with the potential for more in the future), we find out what Ishiah is (albeit indirectly) and the battle between "above and below" is unique in how it is executed within an urban fantasy setting. And though the ending was a bit of a cheat, I enjoyed the surprise anyway. I finally felt some enthusiasm for the characters. And with this improved understanding of who Trixa is, I think the next book has a better starting place to pull readers into her world.

Overall, this wasn't nearly as good as her other series, but I will read the next book before giving up on it. The author took a gamble by not giving Trixa more substance in order to make her more mysterious. I don't think it worked, but it also shouldn't be an issue for the next book. Thurman is an excellent writer.
Rob Thurman's Trick of the Light takes place in the same world as her Leandros Brothers series, but on the opposite coast (Las Vegas instead of New York), and it deals with a whole different layer of the supernatural (angels and demons instead of werewolves and vampires, oh my). There's a touch of Cal and Niko's dynamic in the relationship between Zeke and Griffin--Zeke is one messed-up guy, and Griffin is the one who helps him navigate the difficulties of the real world. However, unlike many authors who like to repeatedly explore certain themes, relationships, or dynamics, Thurman does a great job of making each series, book, relationship, or plot unique and wholly its own thing. Despite their similarities, Zeke and Griffin most definitely are not Cal and Niko.

The characters in Trick of the Light are wonderful, particularly the farther you read and the more that unfolds. Ms. Thurman's take on demons and angels is subtly different from others I've seen, and quite enjoyable. The plot is twisty and turny, and I really can't say much about it without risking revealing too much; I'll just say that by the end I was kicking myself for not having figured certain things out, and that doesn't happen too often.

My only problem with the book was the fact that Trixa, who narrates the tale, re-explains things entirely too much. For instance, yes, cool, we get that when a demon or angel is physically anchored to this world, he can't vanish in a puff of smoke. We don't need to have this re-explained in detail every time it comes up. If the author is worried we won't remember, a passing remark is all that's required; readers appreciate it when they're assumed to have a little intelligence.

Apart from that however, I absolutely loved Trick of the Light and immediately hunted down a copy of its sequel, which I can't wait to read. Authors like Rob Thurman and Shiloh Walker make it tough to keep up with all the really great books out there!
